Starting a design brief – Creating a design brief – GCSE Art and Design Revision

The starting point for any design is the design brief. The brief outlines what problem a design will solve. It should be referred to throughout the project to make sure what you are working on will solve this problem.

Design area

Areas of design - Interior (hotel reception), textiles and fashion, product design (chair), graphic communication (poster), jewellery (ring), architectural and environmental design

All designs fall into specific design areas. These include product design, graphic communication, textile and fashion, architecture, environmental design, interior design and jewellery.

Each area has different demands and will raise different questions around:

When deciding on a design area you should consider the following:

  • your skill level and experience
  • the materials and equipment available to you
  • whether this is an area that interests you

A successful brief

Whatever your design area, for the design brief to be successful you need to make sure that it:

  • describes a problem that will hold your interest
  • is something you are confident you can produce a response to
  • will challenge your skills

Graphic design | art | Britannica

Graphic design, the art and profession of selecting and arranging visual elements—such as typography, images, symbols, and colours—to convey a message to an audience. Sometimes graphic design is called “visual communications,” a term that emphasizes its function of giving form—e.g., the design of a book, advertisement, logo, or Web site—to information. An important part of the designer’s task is to combine visual and verbal elements into an ordered and effective whole. Graphic design is therefore a collaborative discipline: writers produce words and photographers and illustrators create images that the designer incorporates into a complete visual communication.

The evolution of graphic design as a practice and profession has been closely bound to technological innovations, societal needs, and the visual imagination of practitioners. Graphic design has been practiced in various forms throughout history; indeed, strong examples of graphic design date back to manuscripts in ancient China, Egypt, and Greece. As printing

Darius LeBeaux

Bachelor of Interior Design

Darius LeBeaux didn’t come to LSU intending to study interior design. “I was a biology major first, and I found myself unhappy,” he shared.

When he was young, Darius was interested in interior design without necessarily realizing it: he would re-arrange the furniture in his room every season, and when he arrived to new spaces he liked to run through to explore them, curious about the new interiors.

“I wanted to be able to use my creativity, and I was curious about interior design, so I decided to switch.”

That curiosity grew into passion. “What interests me the most about interior design is the design process: coming up with a concept, space planning, and construction documents – because every project has its own challenges. Those challenges make you think and learn something new every time.”

As a designer Darius aspires to create spaces “where

Naomi Mareschal

Bachelor of Architecture

Naomi Mareschal became interested in design at a young age, and under unlikely circumstances. Originally from New Orleans, she became intrigued with architecture after her family’s home flooded from Hurricane Katrina.

“After Hurricane Katrina, I lived in a FEMA trailer on my front yard,” she shared. “Over those two years, I watched my house get rebuilt from the ground up. Having been amidst all the design decisions of the house I now inhabit, I have ever since then been fascinated with all things architecture and its related professions (construction, interior design, etc.)”

“Architecture draws from all of the subjects I’m most interested by: art, science, technology and environmental awareness,” she said. “You have to constantly consider so many factors to be able to successfully design and create architecture, which has been a welcomed challenge.”

Naomi said architecture is the ideal field for her, since she
