Do You Need a License to Become an Interior Designer?

Interior designer's hand working with illustration sketch, material and color samples

Encompassing much more than just decoration, the field of interior design demands specialized knowledge in a wide variety of areas ranging from building code to human behavior. Part artist, part project manager, and part psychologist, an interior designer is tasked with not only creating beautiful spaces, but ones that meet the mental, emotional, and physical needs of their clients in a safe and functional way.

For many, gaining these necessary skills involves formal education and training, which can lead to licensing or certification. But is a license required to practice interior design? The answer lies in the state where you work and what exactly you do.

Interior Design License—or Not?

As a general guideline, no U.S. state requires a license to work in interior design, though there’s an exception to this rule. In Louisiana, Florida, Nevada, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, you must be registered if you wish to

A Designer Whose Home Is as Fanciful as Her Plaster Creations

For the Italian-born, London-based artist and designer Viola Lanari, creativity is often fueled by a hunt for solutions. When she moved into her two-bedroom apartment on the top floor of a handsome Victorian terrace house in Earl’s Court in 2011, she discovered two unappealing brushed-metal table lamps that had been wired into the fitted alcove cabinets of her living room by a previous owner. Rather than reaching for a screwdriver, she set about reinventing them with a cache of plaster strips left over from an art project she’d completed during her time at the London College of Communication. Inspired first by the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti’s 1930s Tête de Femme lamps, shaped like semi-abstracted female figures, and later by the idea of a fragile flower, she began layering the nondescript bases with the soft, water-soaked gauze. The resulting sculptures are naïve and enchanting: One depicts a woman’s face, its features

Sorry, Jimmy Kimmel! HGTV Designer Critiques Late-Night Hosts’ Decor

The stay-at-home orders enacted across the U.S. in recent weeks to slow the spread of the coronavirus have taken away Americans’ abilities to do many things. But one new pastime they’ve given us is analyzing the home decor of late-night hosts now broadcasting their shows from their respective houses.

TheWrap had HGTV “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” designer Breegan Jane critique the broadcasted homes of Stephen Colbert, James Corden, Trevor Noah, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien. She was impressed by a few — and not so much by others. Jane preferred the spaces that have clearly been “dressed” for TV.

“It’s OK to set the stage a little bit,” she said. “I like the ‘A’ for effort.”

Stephen Colbert

A designer is a person who makes designs for objects. A fashion designer designs clothing, a web designer designs web pages and an automobile designer designs automobiles. In each case, the designer works with the help of a technician or engineer who understands deeper level concepts of manufacturing and engineering and the designer is also largely confined to work at a surface level.

More formally, a designer is an agent that “specifies the structural properties of a design object”.[1] In practice, anyone who creates tangible or intangible objects, products, processes, laws, games, graphics, services, and experiences is referred to as a designer.

    Overview[edit]

Classically, the main area of design was only architecture, which was understood as the major arts. The design of clothing, furniture, and other

Interior Designer Popular With Celebrities Lists Her Own Cubist Home in Los Angeles

Interior designer to the stars LM Pagano has put her own Los Angeles County home—a sculptural cubist structure that played a starring role in the 2005 Bruce Willis thriller “Hostage”—on the market for $4.5 million.

Ms. Pagano, whose clients, she said, include actors Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage and Matthew Perry, bought the six-acre property in Topanga, California, in 2013 for $2.355 million, according to property records, and listed it on March 6 with Greg Holcomb and Cassandra Petersen of Greg Holcomb Real Estate and Nancy Nelms of Snyder Sutton Real Estate.

The 3,640-square-foot, three-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom house, which is a rose-gray color, was designed by architect Thomas “Tom” Egidi of Tuna Studio Architecture in 1990.
