4 Neutral Family Room Design Makeovers + 4 Ways to Create One Yourself!

I think we can thank the Fixer Upper craze for reminding us all that “neutral doesn’t have to be boring!”. But over the last few years as an interior designer, I’ve seen my clients ask for less rustic and farmhouse and more Modern & Neutral Family Room design ideas. They want a comfortable, cozy look that is still polished and streamlined. That definitely sounds like a look I can embrace!

And if you are new to Postbox Designs, Interior E-Design, then you popped over on a good week! This week I’m sharing a recent Family Room makeover, AND I’m sharing three other neutral Family Room designs.

Neutral Family Room Design Tip #1: Stick with These Five Colors

A good way to set up a neutral Family Room design is to stick with a subtle palette of colors. Add interest with patterns, textures and different shades of these colors. To create this look, stay away from bold or bright colors and try:

Whites/Creams

Light Blue

Grays

Tans/Beiges

Navy

In this Family Room design, my client had just purchased this modern light gray sectional sofa from Crate and Barrel (#2). Every other item I added to the space falls into this palette of five colors, but the patterned rug and throw pillows keep tons of visual interest popping around this space!

Neutral Family Room Design Tip #2: Add a Patterned Rug & Pillows

If you have been hanging with me for any amount of time you have heard me say “Go neutral with your big pieces of furniture”. And we followed that advice with the neutral sofa and classic leather chair. BUT with all of that neutral, you need something to break it up. So I always like to add a patterned or highly textured rug (like sisal or jute) to keep things interesting. You don’t want to have large expanses of neutral and solid or your room will start to look b-o-r-i-n-g. I also love patterned rugs because they hide dirt and stains!

For the same reason, layer on that sofa with patterned pillows. I like to use a mix of:

Small pattern pillows

Large pattern pillows

Solid/textured pillows

Neutral Family Room Design Tip #3: Use a Mix of Metals and Woods

In an average Family Room design, there are several main pieces of furniture:

Sofa

Arm chairs

Coffee Table

TV cabinet

Side Tables

Your sofa and armchair will be a fabric or upholstered material. But how do you work in all of the other pieces of furniture? I like to stay away from the matching pieces of furniture (you know when the coffee room and side tables come in a matching set?)…which creates a boring, from the box “matchy-matchy” look. Instead I like to mix it up. So how do you prevent your pieces from clashing?

I like to mix wood and metal. My client already had this distressed wood TV cabinet. So I went with metal for the coffee table and side tables. If we had added another wood piece I would have used one significantly darker so it didn’t look like the pieces were clashing with each other.Postbox Designs Interior E-Design: 5 Ways to Create a Neutral Living Room Design, modern neutral living room decor, neutral family room via Online Interior Design, neutral home decor

Neutral Family Room Design Tip #4: Add in Textures

One way to add interest to a room is by color. But if you are looking for a NEUTRAL Family Room design, then textures will be your BFF! In this Family Room, we incorporated polished gold, matte metals, woven seagrass, rattan, leather, and woven throw pillows. All of the colors are soft and neutral, but there is still interest.

And the great thing about a Neutral Family Room? You can ALWAYS add in color or change up the look with just a few new items!

A huge thank-you to my client for allowing me to share her Family Design with you today. But I also promised you three more Neutral Family Rooms. So I’m sharing a few more Neutral Family Room Makeovers. I hope these will give you a whole new set of ideas for your own home…enjoy!

Have a lot of your main Family Room pieces, but your room doesn’t look…finished? Adding in accessories can make all of the difference:
