Home has become our haven over the past six months. As summer fades to fall, elevate your surroundings by transforming your living space into a cozy oasis. For the fall season, incorporate rich colors and up the comfort factor with a variety of textures, like velvet and knits. These simple decor tips are easy to implement but will make your living space welcoming and cozy.

Coyuchi Mariposa Supersoft Organic Cotton Blanket

California-based bed, bath and apparel retailer Coyuchi has been a sustainable home textiles pioneer since it launched in 1991. Not only does the brand offer beautiful and functional pieces, but it’s the first home brand to enter the circular economy and has begun producing recycled items made of its own, organic material. Just shy of its 30th anniversary in 2021, the brand recently enlisted the accomplished Whitney Thornburg as design director for the brand, which is why the Fall and Holiday 2020 Collection is extra special. This season’s collection is 100% organic and responsibly and ethically processed. The entire collection features natural hues, from deep blue and gray to black and white to ginger. Coyuchi’s latest collection features the Mariposa Supersoft Organic Cotton Blanket and is a wonderful gift for a loved one or for your own home. New this season, it was inspired by a vintage rug and features stripes with woven design details. It’s an ultra-soft alternative to synthetic fleece and adds a light, but warm layer whether you use it while sleeping or cozying up on the couch.

“This is good for people who are moving to a more natural home,” said design director Whitney Thornburg via a Zoom preview for the line.

The blanket is made from 100% organic cotton grown in Turkey and is woven in Germany. It’s also GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified, the highest level of certification for organic textiles.

San Francisco-based interior designer Heather Hilliard recommends throws just like this one to make a home cozy for fall.

“Throws can be folded and draped over chair arms or tossed in a beautiful leather basket,” says Hilliard, who personally loves 4-Ply cashmere throws for sofas and chairs.

Soho Home Holland Arm Chair

The home label from private members’ club Soho House, Soho Home, recently relaunched its interiors collection with a new creative director and design team. The new Fall/Winter collection features 350 new pieces, from furniture and decor to lighting and textiles, and the color scheme and design takes inspiration from the 27 Soho Houses around the world.

While each House’s interiors take inspiration from the destination, whether New York or Mykonos, each House shares a distinct style and features comfortable furnishings with sumptuous fabrics, like velvet, polished-marble coffee tables or mid-century modern furniture. The Holland Arm Chair in Ochre Velvet is the perfect chair for chilly fall days. It’s as cozy as ever next to a fire with a comfortable throw. Inspired by mid-century Scandinavian design, it has large foam cushions and a deep-sit silhouette. There is also button-back detailing and slim ash wood arms, making it perfect for a day of working from home or resting.

Byredo Bibliothèque Candle

Stockholm-based fragrance company Byredo was founded in 2006 and has since garnered cult-like status for its deliciously scented candles and home fragrances. Byredo has perfume, hand and body care, home fragrance, like candles, room sprays and textile perfume, as well as leather goods and accessories. Bibliothèque is one of Byredo’s best-selling scents — and for good reason.

Available in all fragrance categories, this rich, velvety scent transports you to a wood-paneled library filled with leather-bound books. The base scents are leather, patchouli and vanilla; heart is peony and violet; and top is peach and plum. It’s the perfect scent to warm up a living room or bedroom. Not only does this have a rich autumnal scent for fall, but Hilliard says that she “loves the sparkle and warmth of candlelight in the fall.” Light this, pour yourself a dram of Scotch (or your beverage of choice) and settle in with a good book.

Afloral Dried Seasonal Flowers

Dried flowers might be less colorful and fragrant than fresh flowers, but there’s a beauty to them that acts as a complementary decor choice for fall’s beautiful muted color palette. For fall, it’s great to incorporate seasonal plants and flowers in autumnal colors.

“You can easily add warm fall colors with a tall vase or container full of fall foliage,” Hilliard says. “Japanese Maples have rich red and orange leaves. Branches with leaves look great on kitchen islands, entry tables, console tables and coffee tables.”

Chocolate brown dried bunny tail, an ornamental grass, comes in a rich brown hue and looks fantastic in a vase as a centerpiece or to liven up a living room as you transform your home for fall. This dried bouquet from Afloral adds color and texture to any room. Display these flowers in vases or use them in creative ways, like as part of a table setting. Hilliard also recommends placing a bundle of decorative white birch logs in the fireplace.

Heather Hilliard’s Pro Tip

“When styling a client’s kitchen or dining table, we often fill a large wooden or bronze bowl with fall fruits, like pomegranates, persimmons and pears, for fall color and texture,” she says.

Sabai Design The Essential Sofa

Meaning “cozy, comfortable or easy” in Thai, Sabai Design was founded by two women who sought out reasonably priced, easy-to-configure furniture that prioritized sustainability and great design. For those who swap furniture seasonally, but don’t want to break the bank, Sabai Design’s Essential Sofa is a great choice, not to mention it comes in a range of colors perfect for the fall season, including the lovely Indigo hue pictured above. It’s a luxury sofa on a budget and has the value of being sustainable from top to bottom.

The fabric is recycled velvet, made 100% from recycled water bottles and is inherently stain-resistant. Furniture is often finished with harsh chemicals, but Sabai doesn’t use chemical treatments on its furniture. The frame of the sofa uses FSC-certified wood, foam is CertiPUR certified and pillows are made using recycled fiber fill. Pet lovers will appreciate that the sofa is also scratch-proof and stain resistant, but should you need to clean it, it can be done so easily with household cleaners.

Not only is Sabai Design a Black-owned organization, but the company makes its products in the U.S. with a family run manufacturer. Other products include The Essential Sectional and The Essential Ottoman, depending on what you’re looking for.

Garde Mind the Gap 6’x9’ Rug

Fall style is all about textures and colors. The Mind the Gap Rug from Los Angeles-based boutique Garde is from the brand cc-tapis, a Milan-based rug company. Made in Nepal, it’s hand-knotted by Tibetan artisans and is made from soft, hand-spun Himalayan wool, bamboo silk and is washed with purified rainwater from the region. The color block design is separated by a bold line made from bamboo silk and adds a unique dimension to the rug.

“We like to add colorful patterned rugs to switch colors for the fall season. A runner in a kitchen or a small rug in an entry hall can add color and texture,” Hilliard says.

The company prides itself on its eco-conscious approach, like the hand-spun elements, and respects the culture of the craft of weaving in the region. Not only does cc-tapis have all of its rugs made in Nepal by Tibetan artisans, but because of the handmade element, they are also to create very unique bespoke carpets and rugs for its clientele. Because it’s hand-loomed, no two rugs will be the same. This 6’x9’ rug can also be special ordered in other sizes.

RH Velvet Brushstroke Striated Pillow Cover by Rusty Arena

Swapping pillows for the fall season is not only easy, but it elevates any room and adds variety to your living space. The Velvet Brushstroke Striated Pillow Cover by textiles designer Rusty Arena is from RH, and the Fog/Copper colorway is perfect for the fall season. Made of 100% rayon velvet, the pillow is silk-screened by hand and features a hand-embossing process that creates variations in  the pile’s luster and texture. Thanks to this hand-making process, no two pillows are alike. Velvet instantly makes a space feel cozier and luxurious. Don’t be afraid to pair with other pillows with interesting patterns and motifs to add some fun detail to your sofa.

Pottery Barn Handmade Hammered Glassware Collection

Handmade from blown glass, Pottery Barn’s Handmade Hammered Glassware Collection features Double Old Fashioned, Highball and a Stemless Wine Glass, with the carafe sold separately. Fall is all about incorporating textures and this lovely collection adds a textural element that looks fantastic on a dinner table spread and creates an artisanal effect. Organic lines and handmade craftsmanship create a beautiful visual interest to any table, and we love the Smoke hue. The collection also comes in clear.
