Home’s over-the-top Halloween decorations incite numerous calls to police from neighbors

A Dallas, Texas home owner’s Halloween decorations are so realistic – they look like a crime scene and unamused observers have called the police many times.

Steven Novak, an artist in East Dallas, fully admits being extremely passionate about Halloween, much to the chagrin of his neighbors and the Dallas Police Department.

Reported by the Dallas Observer, Novak said, “I’ve always been up to hijinks like flying ghosts or 7-foot tall snow sculptures of myself, so if I was gonna do Halloween, it was obvious that it should be hyperreal. No lights or fog machine … something that would really freak people out walking by in the dark. So I whipped up some dummies and slung 20 gallons of blood all over.”

He doesn’t have spiders, tombstones and scary pumpkins all over his yard like most people. Novak’s home is the stage of a real horror show.

On his front sidewalk, one dummy lies with his head pulverized and what looks like a chain saw stuck in its back, another lies with a metal safe where the head used to be (maybe Novak watched a lot of Road Runner cartoons growing up), and a few ‘body parts’ lie mostly inside bloodied trash bags that seem to be falling off a wheelbarrow. A nice touch is the recyclable bin full of skulls, soaking in blood of course.

“I’m most proud of the wheelbarrow tipped over by the street full of Hefty bags, looking like a failed attempt to dispose of the dismembered bodies in the middle of the night.” Novak says. “A kid walked by and asked me what happened to them; I said they ate too many Skittles.”

Unfortunately, when the weather doesn’t cooperate and rains, the “blood” was being washed away and not appearing as vivid, so he waters the dummies with the blood mixture every morning for a while “to the dismay of early dog walkers and joggers.” He tells them he is “Watering the bodies.”

Jamie Vahala of the Dallas Observer quipped “While some people embrace Halloween hijinks, Novak gives them a bear hug. Only it’s a zombie bear with blood pouring out of its mouth.”

With not everyone being on the same horror spectrum as Novak, it’s not surprising that neighbors or passer-byers have called the police to complain and it’s happened multiple times.

“Neighbors told me cop cars were in front of my house a lot during the day,” he says. “I was only home twice to receive them. They told me they thought it was cool and that they were only there because they were required to reply to complaints from the sergeant.”

Novak continues, while laughing, “They were in formation at the door and when I opened it they asked me if it was all mine. I asked, ‘You mean the blood and the bodies?’ Yeah, that’s me.”

Neighbors be warned – because Novak told the Dallas Observer, “Honestly, though, I think I could’ve used more,” Novak said. “[My plans] were way worse on paper. Next year though!”
