HGTV unveiled its 2021 Dream Home that will be given to a lucky contestant. The home was built and designed by Middletown-based JPS Construction, and the interior designer was industry professional Brian Patrick Flynn.

The Daily News asked Flynn what inspired his choices inside the house situated on the water in Portsmouth.

1) What inspired the design?

The americana/nautical roots of Newport.

2) Did you use any local designers or artists?

The architect, builder and General contractor are all local. Due to the pandemic, I commissioned art through social media and also artists near my own home in Atlanta since back in May and June, many businesses were still closed when I was designing the house.

3) Much has been said about the color choices. Why did you choose this scheme?

The color scheme is from our paint partner, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams and this is their Color Collection of the Year for 2021. To adapt those hues to the vernacular, I went with the color of the year, Passionate, on the walls of the common spaces since it’s a shade of New England red and fits the historical hues used on many houses throughout the region.

4) Have you designed other HGTV Dream Homes, and how does this one differ from others?

This is the first straight-up New England style house I’ve done and it’s also the first sitting on a bluff with a river view. This is the 12th home I’ve designed for HGTV.

5) How much does location factor into the design of a particular Dream Home?

The location has to evoke a feeling of dreaminess, the type of property that many people associate with a great escape. We also like the locations to be very different from year to year so we showcase a variety of lifestyles and cultures. Also, it’s important that the property be accessible to an airport and we try and stay within an hour or so of a major one so getting to and from the house is not super complicated.
